Dutch ice cream manufacturer Hertog and LUON first teamed up for the construction of a new website in 2009. Rather than just being a digital shop window for the popular Unilever brand, hertogijs.nl has evolved into a full-blown ice cream experience center, with an interactive calender for nationwide icecream tastings, a constantly growing archive of original recipes and a lively kids corner with loads of fun-stuff-to-do.
Hertog and LUON cater to mobile ice cream lovers
As more and more web users are making the shift towards mobile devices to access the web, Hertog once again called upon LUON to develop a portable version of their website for smart phones. Now that’s what we call Gefundenes Fressen.
First we stripped down the website to its bare essentials and determined which features ice cream lovers on the go would actually use. A descriptive overview of all Hertog ice cream flavors to help them choose? No doubt. One–touch access to the archive of ice cream recipes, so they can pick up all the right ingredients at the store? Absolutely. And an interactive locator for free Hertog ice cream tastings throughout the Netherlands, based on the user’s current location and coupled with Google Maps? We agreed that true ice cream fans would go nuts over that. And if they do, we wanted to make it super easy for them to share it through Facebook and Hyves.
Out on the road, less is more
The true challenge was to optimize the content for the limited dimensions of the mobile phone screen. Of course we didn’t just cram the original content into its mobile version. Instead we selected, portioned and rewrote the lot to make it easier for the user to access and navigate. Perfectly tailored to be fast loading, ultra-readable and intuitive. And thanks to the modular setup, adding extra content (like new flavors, upcoming tastings or special promos) is peanuts, minimizing the maintenance hassle for the site administrator.
